My daughter taught 5th grade through the pandemic, both virtually and in person, making her third year of teaching even more of a challenge. She has always been very conscientious, both as a student and as a teacher. She often sets unrealistic expectations for herself and judges herself more harshly than necessary, but she takes her responsibility very seriously. She works under the authority of the state, the school district, and her administration but above all else, she serves her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
“Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.”

Solomon refers to himself as the teacher in Ecclesiastes. In summary, he writes, “The Teacher sought to find just the right words to express truths clearly.”

Every good teacher you’ve ever had, the ones who made a lasting impression, cared about both their subject matter and their students. Even the most mundane topic, in their capable hands, became interesting, noteworthy, memorable. They were passionate about learning and their enthusiasm was contagious. You looked forward to being in their classroom because you never knew what to expect, but you knew it would be good!
Before Jesus was crucified, resurrected, and ascended to heaven, he made a promise to His followers. “But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.”

His classroom can be anywhere at any time! The Holy Spirit resides with every believer and being One with the living Word, Jesus, the Spirit is constantly teaching and reminding. As a parent trying to take advantage of teachable moments, the One who knows your very thoughts, who knows your words before you speak them, can impart wisdom in a moment that cannot be garnered from hours of study!
What sort of student are you of the Word? “Students are not greater than their teacher. But the student who is fully trained will become like the teacher.”

“But you have received the Holy Spirit, and he lives within you, so you don’t need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what he teaches is true—it is not a lie. So just as he has taught you, remain in fellowship with Christ.”

“So you must remain faithful to what you have been taught from the beginning. If you do, you will remain in fellowship with the Son and with the Father. And in this fellowship we enjoy the eternal life he promised us.”

Isaiah prophesied Israel’s coming judgement at the hand of the Babylonians while at the same time looking even further ahead to a time of restoration. Israel’s rebellion led to their judgment but the faithfulness of God caused their restoration.

“This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved.
In quietness and confidence is your strength. But you would have none of it. So the Lord must wait for you to come to him so he can show you his love and compassion. For the Lord is a faithful God.
Blessed are those who wait for his help. Though the Lord gave you adversity for food and suffering for drink, he will still be with you to teach you. You will see your teacher with your own eyes. Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, “This is the way you should go,” whether to the right or to the left.”
Isaiah 30:15, 18, 20-21 NLT

Even during a pandemic, you will see your Teacher with your own eyes and your own ears will hear Him. Let’s show up early to class in anticipation of what the Lord has planned to teach us today!
