Splendor

I am not musically gifted but I love to sing. I took several years of piano lessons and my fingers instinctively follow music as if I’m playing, but I never really got past chopsticks. My babies were serenaded with hymns and worship songs rather than lullabies as I rocked them to sleep, the lyrics a tribute to the Author of their lives. I sing aloud to a star-filled sky at midnight. I make my joyful noise along with the radio while writing letters, paying bills or folding laundry. I sing His praises aloud in these quiet moments when I’m overwhelmed by His majesty.

“I will praise you every day; yes, I will praise you forever. I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles. The Lord is close to all who call on him, yes, to all who call on him in truth.”

Sometimes things we take most for granted are the things that should inspire awe and wonder, reminding us of God’s glorious presence. The sun rises and sets every single day as it has since the beginning of time, marking our days and seasons, so dependable yet largely unnoticed. The colors on display at sunset as rays of visible light cut across the atmosphere are breathtaking and each night is different. The birth of our children, followed by the way their bodies grow and develop before our eyes is miraculous. Somehow we manage to trivialize even the most beautiful things. We complain that the sun is too bright or too hot, the day too long or too short. Our children are outgrowing their clothes too fast or not growing or performing academically or athletically as expected. I want to be so attuned to the image of God in everything that all of life inspires me to worship!

When Jesus entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday before his trial and crucifixion, “as he rode along, the crowds spread out their garments on the road ahead of him. When he reached the place where the road started down the Mount of Olives, all of his followers began to shout and sing as they walked along, praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen. “Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in highest heaven!” But some of the Pharisees among the crowd said, “Teacher, rebuke your followers for saying things like that!” He replied, “If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!””

“Worship the Lord in all his holy splendor. Let all the earth tremble before him. Let the heavens be glad, and the earth rejoice! Let the sea and everything in it shout his praise! Let the fields and their crops burst out with joy! Let the trees of the forest sing for joy”

Psalms 96:9, 11-12 NLT

“Honor the Lord for the glory of his name. Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness. The voice of the Lord echoes above the sea. The God of glory thunders. The Lord thunders over the mighty sea. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic.”

Psalms 29:2-4 NLT

Psalm 19:1 says “the heavens declare the glory of God,” and Jesus said even the rocks would cry out if we fail to worship Him. “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe,”

Hebrews 12:28 NIV

A day is coming when every knee will bow and every tongue confess Jesus as Lord to the glory of God. (Philippians 2:10-11) On that day, “everyone will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with great power and glory, (Mark 13:26) but today you and I have the opportunity to willingly offer a sacrifice of praise! “Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name.”

Hebrews 13:15 NIV

I don’t need to be musically gifted to overflow with worshipful praise, though I’m forever grateful to those who are! Jesus said we speak from the overflow of our hearts, (Luke 6:45) so today my prayer is that I would overflow with praise for my great and glorious God!
