Still Standing

Wise Man And The Foolish Man – YouTube Music

The wise man built his house upon the rock

The wise man built his house upon the rock

The wise man built his house upon the rock

And the rains came tumbling down

The rains came down and the floods came up

The rains came down and the floods came up

The rains came down and the floods came up

And the house on the rock stood firm

The foolish man built his house upon the sand

The foolish man built his house upon the sand

The foolish man built his house upon the sand

And the rains came tumbling down

The rains came down and the floods came up

The rains came down and the floods came up

The rains came down and the floods came up

And the house on the sand went smash

I grew up learning Biblical truth set to music and I made plenty of the same available to my own children. Now, by the grace of God, I get the chance to sing these same songs and hymns to my grandchildren. I say by the grace of God because my daughter found out she was expecting my first grandchild just one month after I was diagnosed with stage three colorectal cancer. My diagnosis was totally unexpected and in my shock, my thoughts turned instinctively Godward to familiar lyrical truth for solace.

If you think these songs are only for children, think again! John 1:12 says to all who receive Jesus, believing in His name, He gives the right to become children of God. Our hearts will always long for the love of the Father. The Word of God is the powerful presence of God in me, giving the Holy Spirit the foundation necessary to establish my life(Proverb 16:9), to keep me abiding in Christ(John 15:5), and to deflect the fiery arrows of the evil one. (Ephesians 6:16)

Scripture is the basis for the simple lyrics and the catchy tune gets stuck in my head, making it easier to remember the words. Jesus used scriptures to refute the devil while being tempted in the wilderness. (Matthew 4:4,7,10) The disciples and apostles preached using scripture that pointed to Christ. (Acts 1:16) Jesus took two men through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. (Luke 24:27) Knowing the Word is knowing God through His Son, Jesus, but Jesus carries us a step further, giving us visual learners an additional peg to hang out hats on.

“So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say?

I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it.

It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock.

When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built.

But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house right on the ground, without a foundation.

When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.”

Luke 6:46-49 NLT

Although the “splat!” at the end of the song was always a favorite with the kids, I don’t know anyone who would choose that ending for themselves. When the dust settles, I want to be standing on solid ground! Jesus is the one and only sure foundation.
