Stay on the Path

I duck my head to avoid the low hanging branches and catch a spider’s web across my face.

A few weeks ago, the leaf canopy was invisible; the #path bright with sunlight.

Now sunlight dances across the darkened #path as saplings, weighted with spring leaves, lean in to greedily soak in the sun’s rays.

These woods are transformed with the seasons, reminding me of enchanted forests in the books I enjoy.

The trail began with an abandoned road bed. My husband and I explored together, finding the #path of least resistance. He worked tirelessly, cutting back vines and brush to form a loop for walking our Great Danes, Jake & Ella.

As we walk together, he’s constantly falling back to clear debris. Wind and rain regularly litters the ground with branches, but now that spring has sprung, the field grasses and sweet gum sprouts grow up almost overnight. In the areas where the trail becomes invisible, we press on, trusting the dogs’ noses.

Walking is my daily physical exercise. Reading and meditating on God’s Word daily is my mental and spiritual calisthenics. Both are necessary in order for me to be whole, able to enjoy the abundance that surrounds me each day.

As a cancer survivor one year out, I am sincerely grateful for life and health. This month one year ago, I was awaiting surgery. I needed six weeks to recover from 28 consecutive chemo-radiation therapy sessions followed by 8 rounds of chemotherapy over a six month period. I still have not entirely recovered the stamina I enjoyed before my diagnosis, but I am working toward that goal.

As a relatively new grandmother with one nine month old grandson and a granddaughter on the way, I enjoy walking alongside my children in their parenting journeys. The future is full of hope and opportunities to share Jesus with the next generation. Since you cannot share something you do not possess, I study my Bible diligently- for my own spiritual edification and in obedience to the Great Commission.

“Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval.

Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth.”

2 Timothy 2:15 NLT

“Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.””

Matthew 28:19-20 NLT

So I’ll keep walking this #path before me wherever it leads, knowing I’m in good company.

“God has said,

“I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.”

So we can say with confidence,

“The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear.”
