An isolated patch of moonlight shone on the floor at the foot of my bed. I’m up at all hours of the night and I had never seen this spot before so I stepped across it, searching for its origin. A full moon was just a day or two away. There were no clouds in the night sky but the moon was not yet visible over the lake, and the angles were all wrong for our westward facing windows. I glanced upward as I stepped into the bathroom and there it was in the transom window above the shower, a brilliant moon. I turned to look at the spot of moonlight on the floor and my shadow now obscured most of it. That’s when I remembered Thomas’s rainbow in this very spot. The sun shining through this same window and the shower door refracted the light perfectly to display a rainbow on the floor. As the earth shifted in its course around the sun, the rainbow had crept slowly up the wall and disappeared from sight. As I slipped back into bed, something occurred to me. God on display in my life should make people look for the Source of the Light. My job is to make sure they know it isn’t me!
““You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.
No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.
In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”

Rainbows and moonlight only exist because of the sun. We are the light of the world only in right relationship with God through His Son, Jesus. As we abide in Him, (John 15) obedient to His commands, we increasingly reflect His glory.
“We can all draw close to him with the veil removed from our faces. And with no veil we all become like mirrors who brightly reflect the glory of the Lord Jesus.
We are being transfigured into his very image as we move from one brighter level of glory to another.
And this glorious transfiguration comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”

“So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering.
Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him.
Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking.
Instead, fix your attention on God.
You’ll be changed from the inside out.
Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it.
Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.
I’m speaking to you out of deep gratitude for all that God has given me, and especially as I have responsibilities in relation to you.
Living then, as every one of you does, in pure grace, it’s important that you not misinterpret yourselves as people who are bringing this goodness to God.
No, God brings it all to you. The only accurate way to understand ourselves is by what God is and by what he does for us, not by what we are and what we do for him.”

“There came a man commissioned and sent from God, whose name was John. [Mal 3:1]
This man came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe [in Christ, the Light] through him.
John was not the Light, but came to testify about the Light.
There it was—the true Light [the genuine, perfect, steadfast Light] which, coming into the world, enlightens everyone. [Is 49:6]”

“They came to John and here is what they said to him. “Rabbi, that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan River is baptizing people. He is the one you told us about. Everyone is going to him.”
John replied, “A person can receive only what God gives them from heaven.
You yourselves are witnesses that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah. I was sent ahead of him.’
The bride belongs to the groom. The friend who helps the groom waits and listens for him. He is full of joy when he hears the groom’s voice.
That joy is mine, and it is now complete.
He must become more important.
I must become less important.
The one who comes from above is above everything.
The one who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks like someone from the earth.
The one who comes from heaven is above everything.
The one whom God has sent speaks God’s words. That’s because God gives the Holy Spirit without limit.
The Father loves the Son and has put everything into his hands.
Anyone who believes in the Son has eternal life.
Anyone who does not believe in the Son will not have life. God’s anger remains on them.””

“God’s grace has been given to me. So here is what I say to every one of you.
Don’t think of yourself more highly than you should.
Be reasonable when you think about yourself.
Keep in mind the faith God has given to each of you.”

“So you too, when you have done everything that was assigned and commanded you, say, ‘We are unworthy servants [undeserving of praise or a reward, for we have not gone beyond our obligation]; we have merely done what we ought to do.’ ””
