Trust

It’s sometimes difficult to know who to trust. Credibility is established within relationship where trust grows over time. When I tell you that I will do something and I follow through repeatedly, I become trustworthy.

My husband and I made very specific promises to each other thirty years ago, and three decades of keeping those vows has resulted in a strong bond built on mutual trust and respect. This sort of relationship does not happen overnight. Initially our vows were based on a future trust in the integrity of the other, now time tested and proved.

God’s Word, the Bible, recorded over a period of about 1,500 years by 35-40 different individuals, gives a faithful account of promises foretold and kept by God through His Son, Jesus Christ. A faith relationship with God begins much the same as marriage. Accepting what I know of Him by faith, I begin to walk through life acknowledging Jesus as Lord and see myself joined to Him. He reveals more of Himself through His Word over time, and His faithfulness is proved again and again in my life.

“For Jesus Christ, the Son of God, does not waver between “Yes” and “No.” …as God’s ultimate “Yes,” he always does what he says. For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!” And through Christ, our “Amen” (which means “Yes”) ascends to God for his glory.”

At times, I am quick to accept a rumor or easily misunderstand facts after hearing only part of the story. How often have I held back from befriending someone because of something I heard about them from someone I’d decided was trustworthy, only to find that their perception was faulty or not based in fact at all. How often might someone hesitate to accept Jesus for the same reasons?

“You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life. I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.”

The best way to know the truth is to discover it for yourself. I don’t consult others to help me know my husband. I go directly to him, spending time with him, to truly know him. God has revealed Himself through His Word and in His Son. I may garner information about Him from others, but if I want to know Him, I will choose to spend time with Him.

“If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.”

Knowing Jesus is a lifelong pursuit. As I invest in my marriage daily in order to nurture the love I share with my husband, so I set aside time to be with Jesus each day for the same reason. The more I know Him, the more there is to love!

“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.”
