He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands

Paul and Silas sang praise to the Lord at the midnight hour from their prison cell. I hum hymns and choruses long past midnight until the words come back, verse after verse, to soothe my newborn grandson as I did my own children. He may not yet understand the lyrics but the familiar tunes will come back to him one day as they have to me, and with them, echoes of my prayer that he will know the Lord also. I pray that he will one day learn to depend on God for every need and praise Him with each breath.

“Let the godly sing for joy to the Lord; it is fitting for the pure to praise him.

For the word of the Lord holds true, and we can trust everything he does. He loves whatever is just and good; the unfailing love of the Lord fills the earth.”

It’s tempting to worry about the world awaiting my grandson as he grows up in this godless generation, but my belief in Sovereign God forbids it. As the Psalmist says, “the unfailing love of the Lord fills the earth.” Space may be a vacuum but nowhere in the universe is void of His unconditional love. God is love and God is light. His presence insures darkness will not prevail. He has not given up nor has He surrendered an inch.

“The Lord frustrates the plans of the nations and thwarts all their schemes. But the Lord’s plans stand firm forever; his intentions can never be shaken. What joy for the nation whose God is the Lord, whose people he has chosen as his inheritance.

The Lord looks down from heaven and sees the whole human race. From his throne he observes all who live on the earth. He made their hearts, so he understands everything they do.”

We are not a mystery to the Almighty. He is not wringing His hands, unsure of what to do with His wayward children nor is He unmoved by the plight of His faithful ones. He knows me better than I know myself. As He has faithfully prepared me for events in my own life that I could not foresee, so He will be faithful to my grandchild, even to a thousand generations not yet born.

Corrie Ten Boom, Holocaust survivor, in the song, “You Are My Hiding Place,” quotes Psalm 32:7.

“You are my Hiding Place.

You always fill my heart with songs of deliverance.

Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You.”

“But the Lord watches over those who fear him, those who rely on his unfailing love. We put our hope in the Lord. He is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. Let your unfailing love surround us, Lord, for our hope is in you alone.”

Psalms 33:1, 4-5, 10-15, 18, 20-22 NLT

The same unfailing love of God that fills the earth surrounds us! He is our help and our shield. We can rely on His unfailing love. For the word of the Lord holds true, and we can trust everything he does. That’s faith in a nutshell. It’s why I don’t despair for this generation. I trust the One who made my heart and who understands everything I do. He is trustworthy. You can trust Him too.

Dear God,

I praise You because You’ve got the whole world in Your hands. You’ve got me. You’ve got Thomas and his parents. You’ve got his children’s children. You exist beyond the boundaries of time, seeing and knowing all in an instant. You know my days on the earth from start to finish. You know the times and places where my path will cross with others and how You plan to use those interactions for Your kingdom purpose. Thank You for this precious time with my first grandson. Each moment is a gift with purpose. May the words that I say and the thoughts that I think be pleasing in Your sight. (Psalm 19:14) Amen.
