Keeping The Glass Full

My husband pushed his empty iced tea glass closer and closer to the edge of the table, frustrated with the lack of service during dinner. He’s always been a good tipper, having worked in just about every position in an independent grocery from the time he was old enough to work and on through college. He appreciates people in very tangible ways but sometimes people disappoint. We are all human. We all have our moments. Some days the glass is half full and some days it’s half empty, but together, by the grace of God, we have a full glass. We complement each other, exactly as God intended, both within our marriage and within the body of Christ, the Church.

“Now the Lord God said,

“It is not good (beneficial) for the man to be alone;

I will make him a helper [one who balances him—a counterpart who is] suitable and complementary for him.””

Genesis 2:18 AMP

The same is true within the Church universal, the body of Christ.

“The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body.

So it is with the body of Christ.

Yes, the body has many different parts, not just one part.

If the foot says, “I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand,” that does not make it any less a part of the body.

And if the ear says, “I am not part of the body because I am not an eye,” would that make it any less a part of the body?

If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear?

Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything?

But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it.

How strange a body would be if it had only one part!

Yes, there are many parts, but only one body.

The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.”

The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.”

In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary.

And the parts we regard as less honorable are those we clothe with the greatest care.

So we carefully protect those parts that should not be seen, while the more honorable parts do not require this special care.

So God has put the body together such that extra honor and care are given to those parts that have less dignity.

This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other.

If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad.

All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.”

1 Corinthians 12:12, 14-27 NLT

“No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church.

And we are members of his body.

This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one.”

Ephesians 5:29-30, 32 NLT

We are stronger together, better together.

“Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed.

If one person falls, the other can reach out and help.

But someone who falls alone is in real trouble.

Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm.

But how can one be warm alone?

A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer.

Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.”

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 NLT

A cord of three strands, reminiscent of the Trinity, God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit, is also illustrated by the marriage triangle I’ve shared with each of my children before they were married. Three legs picture God at the apex and husband and wife at the base angles. The closer each draws to God, the closer they become to each other. Always connected, as the promises each made before God bind them one to another, but seeking unity continually in Christ.

Rich, rewarding marriages allow for days when the glass feels half empty rather than half full. As the love of God in Christ Jesus overflows in each of us, we build each other up. (I John 4:19) This is how the glass stays full.

“May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully.

Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.”

Ephesians 3:19 NLT

“He makes the whole body fit together perfectly.

As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.”

Ephesians 4:16 NLT
